What to wear – engagement photos

What to wear – engagement photos

A bride’s guide

Brides, are you wondering what to wear for your engagement session? You’re not alone. This is the most frequently asked question I get asked during engagement season! I’ve finally decided to write down some helpful tips to help you find the perfect outfit! So here we go!

1. Make use of the season

Take advantage of the season and put together an outfit that reflects the time of year! There’s so much to play within each season. In Fall and Winter, think about cozy scarfs, warm boots, cute jackets, and hats! Don’t be afraid to bundle up during this time of year. Layers are a good thing! We can always create different looks with the layers you wear. After all, when it’s cooler outside, it’s the perfect time to snuggle close with your fiance.

In Summer and Spring, think about a sundress, sandals, shorts, and a statement necklace. This is a great time to let those warm-weather vibes show! Love is in the air, the birds are chirping, and your wedding day is just around the corner! You can’t go wrong with soft floral prints and pastels during this season.

2. Stick with two outfits

If you’re anything like me, I can always narrow things down to two options! I’m so indecisive with my clothing! If this happens to you, feel free to bring a second outfit along! I normally say bring one casual outfit and one dressy outfit so you have different looks in your images. I’m more than happy to help you with narrowing outfits down!

3. Choose a classic look

There are so many fashion trends, I just can’t keep up with them! Remember that your photographs will last a lifetime. How do you want to look back on them? Choose a classic look that will remain timeless. Trust me, you’ll thank me in the future!

4. Complement each other but don’t match

Ladies, as we all know, the hardest part of planning your engagement outfits will be finding something for your fiance to wear! It’s so important that you pick a color theme and stick to it. There’s nothing more distracting than being in opposite colors or patterns! You want to make sure you complement each other but don’t match completely. Look for similar colors and complementing patterns. Want to know a secret? Choose pastels, cool colors, and neutral tones. These will always look amazing in photographs and you will be the main focus of the images.

5. Be comfortable

My engagement sessions tend to go 1.5-2 hours. It’s so important that you feel amazing in your outfit. You want to be able to move around, walk, and have fun during this time! If your feet are killing you or your clothing is not comfortable, it can make for a miserable experience. At the end of the day, just be you, and wear something that you feel good in!

6. Avoid clothing with big logos or clothes

Gentlemen, this one is for you! Clothing with big logos or writing on them is so distracting! I’m all for your favorite sports team or funny shirts but this is not the time to wear them! We want to focus on your relationship and engagement. Anyways, we want that ring to be the main attraction!

7. Bring comfortable shoes

There’s nothing worse than having your feet hurt when you have to walk around for 2 hours. Make sure the shoes you bring are comfortable. Ladies, if you have a pair of shoes that are adorable but hard to walk in, bring some flats to switch into in between shooting. Gentlemen, no sports shoes! This is a time to dress up and slip into some dress shoes or boat shoes!

8. Accessorize

Ladies, I love accessories! There’s nothing like a statement necklace, scarf, or belt that just makes an outfit! That being said choose one main accessory. In photographs, it’s so easy for our eyes to get distracted. We want the focus of your engagement photos to reflect you. Sometimes less is more with accessories.

9. Get your hair and makeup done!

I love getting my hair and makeup done. It just makes me feel good! Does anyone else feel the same? Ladies, you’re engaged!! This is such a special time to celebrate!! Treat yourself to getting your hair and makeup done. It’s also a great time to practice for the wedding day!

10. Relax and have fun!

At the end of the day, no matter what outfit you end up choosing, this is such a milestone in your life. You will absolutely love your images and have fun during the process!

I hope you found these tips helpful! I always love helping my brides pick out outfits if you have any questions! Some of my favorite stores to get outfit ideas are Morning Lavender, Francesas, O0h La Luxe, and Banana Republic!
