Born at 11:08 PM | 7.4lbs | 20.25 inches long

Musa and I are just over-the-moon welcoming our sweet baby girl to the family. I have been wanting to share Olivia’s birth story for a while now but somehow the days are passing by SO fast and I haven’t even had a chance to sit down and write it out! I never truly understood the phrase “blink and you’ll miss it” until I became a Mama! I’m trying to soak in every second and slow down time!

Olivia’s birth was quite eventful but we are just so blessed that both she and I were healthy! During my final weeks of pregnancy, Olivia wasn’t growing as she should’ve been. The doctor thought that something wasn’t quite right with her placenta as she was measuring smaller than a full-term baby. My doctor didn’t want me to go past my due date so we were scheduled to be induced on December 18th, the day before her due date!

On December 17th, Musa and I packed up our bags in the morning and spent the day enjoying our last day as a family of two! Later that day, my sister’s dog, Arlo, ended up slipping a spinal disc so Musa and I spent the evening with her in the vet emergency room. Once Arlo was settled, we went to grab dinner at Chipotle around 8 PM. Standing in line I didn’t feel quite right and almost felt like my water was leaking but, I thought I’d check and see once we got home.

When we got home, I went to the bathroom and realized I was bleeding, like a lot. It wasn’t like anything I’ve ever experienced before and I was very scared. I realized then that my placenta was probably tearing. Throughout my pregnancy, I had marginal placenta previa that moved to low lying in the final weeks. We were cleared for a vaginal birth, however, the placenta tearing was always a possibility throughout my pregnancy.

Thankfully Musa and I were all packed and ready to go so we immediately went to the hospital! They checked us in and because of the placenta tearing they admitted me into the hospital. They were going to see what my body would do to labor and if I made no progress they were going to induce me at my scheduled time of 5 AM on December 18th.

My mom arrived at the hospital soon after we were admitted. We all didn’t get much sleep and were currently going on 24 hours of no sleep! With no progress, 5 AM rolled around and they put me on Pitocin. It took hours until I started to have contractions. Everything was just moving very slowly. Soon I was on the maximum dosage of Pitocin with very limited progress in dilation. The contractions were getting very strong but my body just wasn’t ready to labor naturally.

Then the scary part started, my blood pressure kept dropping and Olivia was having a hard time with the contractions. Her heart rate kept dipping. They even put an internal fetal monitor on her head to get a better idea of her vitals. She just wasn’t handling the induced contractions well, so they slowed the amount of Pitocin I was receiving.

Around 8 PM, almost 48 hours with no sleep, I told my doctor that if this was headed in the direction of a c-section, I did not want it to be an emergency where Musa couldn’t be in the room with me. My doctor said they would try to increase the Pitocin and see how Olivia would handle the contractions. No sooner did they increase the Pitocin, my doctor came right back in the room and called it! We were headed for a c-section, but, because it was urgent and not emergent both my mom and Musa had time to scrub in to be there with me!

At 11:08 PM I heard my mom and Musa gasp. They had held up Olivia from over the drapes but I hadn’t seen her yet. I just heard Musa say, “Bec, she’s so beautiful!” With strong cries, she made her entrance into the world. She was 7lbs 4oz and 20.25 inches long! They took her to the newborn table to assess her and that’s when I saw her. It was the coolest moment of my life. I couldn’t believe that she was inside of me! Then, they placed her on my chest as they closed me up! The first thing I noticed were her eyelashes! She had Musa’s long eyelashes. She was so incredibly beautiful and all mine!

Soon after, we went to recovery and just soaked in every second with our new bundle of joy. I’m so incredibly blessed that this little girl made me a Mama and I can’t wait to watch her grow!

Lindsay Reed Photography took THE most amazing Fresh 48 photos of us. I’m so incredibly thankful for these memories!
