When God’s Plans Are Bigger Than Your Own
When I reflect on my journey since starting my photography business, I realize that it all boils down to one thing: striving to be the best version of myself. I know, I know—it sounds simple, right? Everyone wants to be their best self. But let me tell you, it’s a lot harder than it seems. At least, it was for me.
Photography has always been my passion. I first picked up a camera in high school and fell in love with the art of photography during my film 101 classes. Eventually, I transitioned from film to digital photography and I was hooked! However, back then, I never imagined that one day I would become a professional wedding photographer and start my own business. My original path was actually in veterinary medicine!
I went to college to pursue a career in medicine and business. But little did I know, God had a completely different plan for me—a plan that led me to a career I could never have dreamed of and one that has brought me so much joy.
The Path I Didn't Expect
I worked relentlessly toward a career in veterinary medicine, even making it onto the waitlist for vet school. Eventually, I was accepted, but I quickly realized that the timing wasn’t right. It honestly felt like God was gently nudging me to listen and trust that this wasn’t the path He had for me. It was a difficult decision, but I knew it was the right one.
As fate would have it, veterinary medicine did lead me to Columbus, Ohio, where I took a research position at the Columbus Zoo. I also managed a veterinary practice on the side. It was through that practice where I met my amazing husband (trust me, that blog post is coming soon!). Sometimes, life has a way of bringing you exactly where you need to be.
Then, everything shifted. I felt this intense calling to start my own business—something I never expected, but something I knew deep down I had to do. So, I did what anyone in my position would do: I Googled "how to start a photography business." No joke. That’s how it all began.
Overcoming Challenges in Business and Photography
Starting my own business was not without its challenges. The biggest hurdle I faced was learning how to balance running a business with sharing my story. It was tough to break down the "professionalism mask" that so often dominates the business world. But as a photographer, I realized that connecting with people is everything. It’s not just about posing people for pretty pictures—it’s about authenticity. And trust me, real life isn’t always as polished as what you see on Instagram!
I was learning that perfection doesn't exist, and that I needed to be okay with the mess—my desk wasn't always tidy, I didn’t always have time to shower every day, and that was okay. But here's the thing: perfection is a lie. We are all just doing our best with what we have, and that’s what matters.
The Competitive Nature of the Creative Industry
What I wasn’t prepared for was the intense competition in the creative industry. The photography market is oversaturated, and I found myself discouraged by how competitive things could be. Some established photographers didn’t seem all that encouraging, and honestly, it made me question my abilities and my place in the industry. The pressure to compare myself to others was overwhelming.
We’ve all been there, right? The pressure of social media, where everyone’s life looks perfect, their business thriving, and their Instagram feed flawless. If you’re in this industry, you’ve likely experienced that feeling of self-doubt at some point. I certainly have.
The Key Lessons I’ve Learned
But through it all, I’ve learned some crucial lessons that have shaped my journey:
Trust God’s Plan
The most important thing I’ve learned is to give it up to God. When I trusted Him and His plan for me, I started to see the doors open. Without God, I wouldn’t be able to do any of this.Build a Community
The second lesson I learned was the importance of surrounding myself with others. Yes, this industry is competitive, but that doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. Having a community of like-minded people who understand your struggles, share their insights, and support one another is the key to success. Don’t be afraid to build relationships with other creatives. We all rise together.Embrace Your Unique Story
Finally, I’ve realized that everyone has a unique story to tell. What makes me different is what attracts people to my work. Your story and your journey are powerful tools. Don’t try to be someone you’re not or compare your journey to others. People will connect with your authenticity, and that will shine through in your work.
Patience and Persistence Lead to Success
In today’s world of instant gratification, it’s easy to forget that success takes time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a successful business. The more effort and passion I pour into my work, the more my business grows. It takes patience, persistence, and the willingness to keep going, even when things feel tough.
My advice to anyone starting out: take your time, don’t compare, and focus on mastering your craft. Success will come if you’re dedicated and willing to trust the process. And remember, success looks different for everyone—don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
A Final Thought
As I continue on this journey, I often remind myself of this powerful verse from Jeremiah 29:11:
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." – Jeremiah 29:11
This verse has been my guiding light, reminding me that the path I’m on is part of a bigger plan, and it’s exactly where I’m meant to be.
