Rain Is Good Luck, Right? Embracing the Unexpected on Your Wedding Day
Rain. One of the most common worries for brides-to-be when planning their big day. You’ve spent months envisioning the perfect celebration, and the last thing you want is to see dark clouds on the horizon. However, rain doesn’t always have to ruin your plans—it can actually bring good luck!
As a wedding photographer, I can tell you that some of the best and most memorable moments I've seen happen when things don't go according to plan. In fact, my own wedding day is a perfect example of how unexpected weather can turn into a memorable and joyful experience.
When I got married, we didn’t just have a little rain—there was a full-on storm, complete with hail and a tornado warning! My ceremony took place outside at the beautiful Crago Farms, right by a serene pond. The moment the ceremony wrapped up, the winds picked up, and it started pouring rain—along with hail, which spooked my horse and sent him running right toward our reception tent. To top it off, I stepped in horse manure, my veil blew into the pond, and everything I had meticulously planned seemed to fall apart.
But here’s the thing: it wasn’t just a day full of surprises; it was a day full of laughter, connection, and unforgettable moments. Even though the storm changed our plans, it made the day uniquely memorable. The rain ended, the clouds cleared, and we were able to enjoy the rest of the wedding as planned. It was far from perfect, but it was perfect in its own way.
Weddings are about love, joy, and celebrating the union of two people. But the truth is, they can also be unpredictable, and rain is one of the things that might not be part of your original vision. That’s why it's important to embrace the unexpected and have a plan in place so that if the weather does change, you can still enjoy your day and create lasting memories.
Here are some tips to help you stay stress-free and make the most of a rainy wedding day:
1. Have a Backup Plan
It's essential to prepare for any weather scenario, especially if your ceremony or reception is outdoors. If you're planning an outdoor wedding, make sure you have a solid backup plan in place. For us, we had a beautiful outdoor tent, but we also had the barn ready as a backup location if the rain became too intense. Knowing you have a plan B gives you peace of mind and ensures that everything will go smoothly regardless of the weather.
2. Don’t Stress If It Does Rain
One of the best pieces of advice I received on my wedding day was to not sweat the small stuff. If it starts raining, it’s okay—let it go! A close friend told me to just "smile," and it made all the difference. Your guests look to you for guidance, and if you stay calm and happy, they will follow suit. The rain may seem like a hassle at first, but with the right attitude, you can turn it into part of the magic of the day.
3. Grab Some Clear Bubble Umbrellas
Bubble umbrellas are a lifesaver when it rains! They provide coverage while still allowing for great photos. Be sure to have a few of these on hand for you and your bridal party—they’re perfect for outdoor photos in the rain and will allow you to keep your day documented without getting drenched.
4. Plan on Going Outside for Photos
Even if it’s raining, don’t automatically assume you have to skip outdoor portraits. Often, showers will pass or take a break, so stay ready to venture outside for photos. After all, there’s something magical about dancing in the rain, and the shots can be both intimate and whimsical. Some of my most memorable photos have been taken during a brief rainstorm!
5. Embrace the Creative Potential of Rain
Rain can add a romantic, dramatic, and intimate atmosphere to your wedding photos. It creates unique lighting and reflections, and I love how it allows for more creative and playful shots. Rather than letting the rain dampen your spirits, view it as an opportunity to capture stunning, one-of-a-kind images that you'll cherish forever.
The Bottom Line: It’s All About Your Attitude
The key to having a stress-free wedding day, regardless of the weather, is preparation and perspective. Yes, rain can change your plans, but it can also add to the beauty and uniqueness of your wedding day. With a little flexibility, a backup plan, and a smile on your face, you can turn a rainy day into a perfect opportunity for beautiful memories.
Remember: sometimes the most magical moments come when things don’t go according to plan. So, embrace the rain, and you just might find that it’s the perfect touch to your love story.
