The Ultimate Style Guide for Your Engagement Session
One of the most common questions I get from brides is: “What should we wear for our engagement session?” If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, you’re not alone—and I’m here to help! Your engagement session is such a fun and meaningful part of your wedding journey, and choosing the right outfits will help you feel confident, radiant, and totally in love in front of the camera.
Here are my top 10 tips to help you find the perfect looks:
1. Embrace the Season
Each season brings its own unique charm—use it to your advantage!
In fall and winter, think cozy scarves, boots, structured coats, and warm tones. Layering adds depth and texture to your look (and gives us variety to play with during your session). Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to snuggle up close with your fiancé.
In spring and summer, light fabrics, flowy dresses, sandals, and soft florals are your best friends. Pastels, neutrals, and sun-kissed colors reflect the season beautifully and photograph like a dream.
2. Bring Two Outfit Options
Not sure what to wear? Don’t worry—bring two looks! I usually recommend one dressy outfit and one casual outfit so you get two different vibes from your session. We’ll typically start with your more elevated look and then switch halfway through. I’m also happy to help you choose if you're feeling stuck!
3. Choose Timeless Over Trendy
Trends come and go, but your engagement photos will be with you forever. Opt for outfits that feel elegant and timeless—pieces that will still feel beautiful 10, 20, or 30 years from now. Classic silhouettes, muted color palettes, and minimal patterns always look chic.
4. Coordinate—Don’t Match
Your outfits should complement each other, not compete. Stick to a cohesive color palette and avoid bold clashing tones or mismatched patterns. Soft neutrals, pastels, and earthy hues always photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it should be—on the two of you.
5. Wear What Makes You Feel Beautiful (and Comfortable)
You should look amazing and feel comfortable. We’ll be walking, laughing, and moving around, so it’s important to wear clothing and shoes that allow you to move freely. If your heels are stunning but not made for walking, bring a pair of flats to swap in between shots.
6. Skip the Logos
This one’s especially for the gentlemen: skip the bold logos and graphic tees. Clothing with visible branding can distract from the romantic and elegant vibe of your photos. Stick to clean, simple pieces that elevate your overall look.
7. Dress Up Your Feet
Your shoes matter more than you think! For ladies, opt for elegant heels, sandals, or stylish boots—just make sure you can walk comfortably in them. Gentlemen, leave the sneakers at home. Dress shoes or loafers will polish off your outfit and keep the look cohesive.
8. Add a Touch of Accessory Magic
Accessories can elevate your outfit and add a personal touch—but less is more. Choose one statement piece, whether it’s a necklace, a scarf, or a chic hat. The goal is to complement your look, not compete with it.
9. Treat Yourself to Hair & Makeup
This is a special season, and you deserve to feel your best! Professional hair and makeup not only look stunning in photos but also give you a boost of confidence. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to schedule your wedding hair and makeup trial!
10. Relax and Enjoy the Moment
Above all, this session is a celebration of your love story. Your engagement photos are about you—the laughter, the connection, the joy of being engaged. Don’t stress over every detail. Come as you are, wear what feels good, and trust that we’re going to create something beautiful together.
I hope these tips help you feel more confident and excited about your session! If you ever need help choosing your outfits, I’m more than happy to give personalized suggestions.
