How to Capture the Perfect Wedding Ring Shot: Tips and Tricks for Stunning Detail Photos

One of my favorite parts of a wedding day is capturing the wedding day details! And my all-time favorite detail, the wedding rings! It's more than just the sparkle, it's about the start of a love story, the start of a marriage! From hearing how you met to how he proposed, it's all symbolized by this shiny little ring.

Capturing the perfect ring shot can be a little tricky. I use my 105mm lens for capturing all of the tiny details. This lens is amazing and gets the job done! It takes patience and lots of practice. But you know what they say, practice makes perfect! And that is so true for wedding details! Here are some of my favorite tips to capture the perfect ring shot!

Find A Pretty Background

When I first started shooting ring shots I always used to put things in the foreground of the ring. But I learned that having things in the background actually makes for a ring centered photo. This means shooting the ring on an invitation or styling board with florals or details in the background. Using a ring box will put the focus on the ring.  My favorite ring boxes are The Mrs Box. There are many ways to style a ring. It makes it so much fun and creative!

Increase your f/stop

Increasing your f/stop when you are shooting ring shots creates a greater depth of field. By increasing your f/stop you will be sure to capture more details of the rings.

Focus On A Prong Closest To You

Now you are all set up to shoot the ring shot, but where should you focus? I always manually focus on a prong that is closest to me. This will make the ring feel more lifelike and of course in focus. This part times time and a lot of patience.

 Hold Your Breath

When shooting a detail with a lens that takes a little bit longer to focus, it's important to stay absolutely still. Sit or lay comfortably and hold your breath before you take the photo. This will help you stay still and capture a focused image.

Finish With The Saturation Brush

One of the biggest tips for ring shots is during the editing process. Diamonds are reflective. This means they will pick up the colors of your camera, the styling details, and you! The biggest trick for a clean ring shot is to use the saturation brush in Lightroom and brush out the color in the diamond. It creates that catalog diamond that you will absolutely love!
