Why Every Photographer Needs a Multi-Layered Backup System to Protect Their Work
As a photographer, the importance of having a solid backup system cannot be overstated. With the priceless images I capture on a daily basis, I rely on multiple backup strategies to protect my work. In fact, I’m married to a Network Engineer who has drilled into me just how crucial it is to have multiple layers of protection for my business, and he’s absolutely right!
Today, I’m going to walk you through my backup process, how I ensure the safety of my images, and the tools I use to safeguard my business from any unexpected data loss. If you're a photographer, this is a must-read!
1. The Double-Slotted Camera Body: My First Line of Defense
The first layer of my backup strategy is a feature I never compromise on: a double-slotted camera body. I shoot with the Nikon D750, which has two SD card slots. This is invaluable to me. I set it up so that one card is a direct mirror of the other, meaning that as I shoot, both cards save the same images.
Why is this so crucial? Weddings are once-in-a-lifetime events, and having a backup right on-site is non-negotiable. If something happens to one of the cards—be it corruption or a malfunction—I'll still have an identical copy of the images on the second card. It’s a lifesaver on such important days!
2. My Home Backup System: Synology DS216+II with RAID1 Configuration
Once I get home from a wedding or shoot, the next phase of my backup strategy kicks in. I upload all of my RAW images and Lightroom galleries into my Synology DS216+II network-attached storage (NAS) system. This setup is super reliable, with two Western Digital 3TB 7200RPM disks running in RAID1 configuration, meaning they mirror each other for redundancy.
RAID1 ensures that even if one drive fails, the other has a full copy of my data. I get email notifications for anything unusual—whether it’s a temperature spike, unexpected shutdown, or drive errors. This level of monitoring gives me peace of mind and helps me keep track of my backup’s health.
3. Cloud Backup: Backblaze C2 for Ultimate Protection
Even though I trust my Synology setup, I don’t take any chances. In case something happens to my physical backup—whether it’s theft, malfunction, or even a house fire (knock on wood!)—I back up everything to the cloud. For this, I use Backblaze C2. Backblaze is an off-site cloud backup service that syncs with my Synology and uploads any changes I make to my data.
I love that it’s automatic and seamless. As soon as I make any changes—whether I add new images, create galleries, or edit files—Backblaze ensures that my data is safely stored in the cloud. It’s a fail-safe I can’t live without, and it gives me an extra layer of security for those "what if" moments.
4. Client Galleries: Using Pixieset for a Secure and Accessible Client Portal
To ensure my clients’ galleries are safely stored and easy to access, I use Pixieset—a trusted gallery delivery platform designed specifically for photographers. Pixieset provides a beautiful, user-friendly experience for both myself and my clients.
With Pixieset, I can deliver high-resolution image galleries that are easy to view, share, and download. The combination of local and cloud backups provides peace of mind, knowing that even if the worst happens, I have reliable systems in place to recover my work.
This system may seem elaborate, but when it comes to your photography business and your client’s cherished memories, there’s no such thing as being too cautious.
