Planning the Perfect Engagement Session: What You Need to Know
First and foremost—congratulations on your engagement! This is such an exciting chapter, and I couldn’t be happier for you. Take a moment to soak it all in—this season of life goes by so quickly, and before you know it, you’ll be walking down the aisle to say “I do.”
Your engagement session is one of my favorite parts of the wedding experience. It’s a chance for us to get to know one another, ease any nerves about being in front of the camera, and capture the joy and anticipation of this special season. Plus—it's fun! Here are 10 tips to help you prepare for a seamless, stylish, and memorable engagement session.
1. Think of Your Engagement Session as a Wedding Day Warm-Up
Engagement sessions are not only a great way to document your love story—they’re also the perfect time to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. You’ll become familiar with how I work, try out some natural posing, and learn little tricks that will help you look and feel your best on the big day.
2. Schedule Your Session at Golden Hour
Lighting is everything when it comes to beautiful, timeless images. The best time to schedule your engagement session is during golden hour—either shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. This soft, flattering light creates a dreamy glow that elevates your photos with a luxurious, romantic feel.
3. Plan Stylish, Coordinated Outfits
Ladies—flowy dresses, elegant heels, and timeless accessories photograph beautifully and help create soft, romantic movement in your images. Gentlemen—opt for business casual or slightly elevated attire that complements your partner’s look. Avoid sneakers or overly casual clothing, and don’t be afraid to bring two outfit options—one formal, one more relaxed—for variety.
4. Choose a Meaningful Location
Select a location that reflects your personality as a couple—whether it’s your favorite weekend getaway spot, a chic urban setting, or a scenic natural backdrop. If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to provide location suggestions that align with your wedding aesthetic and vision.
5. Allow Plenty of Time
Engagement sessions typically last between 60–90 minutes. We’ll take our time to explore the location, ease into the session, and create genuine moments together. This is a relaxed, enjoyable experience—no need to rush.
6. Share Your Inspiration
I love when couples bring their vision boards or Pinterest favorites to the planning process. Sharing inspiration helps me understand your style and preferences, so we can tailor your session to feel authentically you—with a polished, editorial finish.
7. Bring Meaningful Props (Yes, Including Your Pup!)
Personal touches can elevate your session. Think chic blankets, a bottle of champagne, heirloom accessories, or even your four-legged family members. If you're bringing a pet, be sure to arrange for a helper to assist during the session so you can focus on the moment without distractions.
8. Embrace Closeness and Connection
You may feel a little camera-shy at first, and that’s completely normal! My job is to help you feel confident and natural. Many of the most beautiful moments come from genuine connection and gentle intimacy. Even if a pose feels “close” in the moment, I promise it will look effortlessly romantic on camera.
9. Trust the Process
Sometimes I may ask you to stand in what seems like an unexpected spot, or try a pose that feels a little different—but trust that I see the light, the angles, and the emotion. I’m here to highlight your love story in the most flattering, authentic way possible.
10. Have Fun With It!
This session is a celebration of your engagement—your love, your laughter, and the beginning of forever. There’s no pressure, no rush—just a chance to enjoy each other, create beautiful memories, and get excited for what’s ahead.
If you have any questions about planning your engagement session, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to make this experience relaxed, joyful, and tailored to your unique love story.
