You are getting married! And there is one particular darling in your life at the top of your list to attend, your dog. Most likely your fur baby was a part of your engagement, perhaps playing a pivotal role in the proposal or holding up a sign for your Save the Date cards. So, of course, your lovey will surely take part in the wedding as well! Here are some paw-fect tips to consider for including your pet at your wedding.
Let’s paws and reflect.
First, you must take into consideration your pet’s personality. Is your dog an older dog who is laid back and can handle the unfamiliar environment? Or is your pet a puppy, who has an abundance of energy and likes to chew on everything in sight including the train of your wedding dress? Not so cool! Think about your dog’s tolerances particularly around crowds and kids. If tolerance is low, it might be best to rethink bringing him. If you and your soon to be spouse have dogs, make sure they get along before you bring them together for the big day. You truly don’t want a dogfight occurring during the ceremony. Remember, your pooch plan is all about a pleasant wedding experience for yourselves and your fur friend!

Make sure your venues are okay with having pets. You don’t want to assume your pet is allowed in the church or in the reception hall or at the botanical garden for photos. Some venues are very clear about pets and have strict guidelines. So do your homework so you have a pet-friendly time.

It’s important to notify your photographer that your dog will be apart of the big day. Your photographer may need to provide extra time for pet photos, away from the guests or away from specific high-stress encounters so to get that paw-fect shot!

Decide how Fido will be involved in the ceremony. Is Fido the ring bearer? Will Daisy serve as a flower girl? Will Rover be carrying a sign? Once you know how your dog will participate, then you can plan how he/she will accomplish it.

The wisdom of W.C. Fields, the actor, is evident when he said, “Never work with children or animals, they are scene-stealing and unpredictable!” This statement holds true on your wedding day! The focus should always be on the Bride and Groom. Mr. Fields would agree with me. The Bride and Groom should not walk Rover down the aisle. Instead, have a bridesmaid or a groomsmen escort Rover and make him heel at their side. Considering Rover as the ring bearer, then make sure the sachel is secure and comfortable on his collar and have the groom “pretend” to remove the rings from the handbag. I heard a story about a dog who ran away with the wedding bands! The ceremony came to a screeching halt. If for some reason your baby bolts, the service can continue without a hitch. And clarify with the wedding party that it will be the dog sitter who will retrieve Rover, not the bridesmaids or groomsmen!
Fur better or worse.
If your dog is acting like a flower girl, instead of a basket of petals hanging around her neck, consider wrapping the leash with a fresh flower garland and let the actual humans do the throwing of the petals. Here’s a word of warning. Make sure the flowers you choose at the ceremony are dog-friendly. Baby’s Breath and Lillies are toxic to dogs. Check with your veterinarian what florals are toxic and if you do use them make sure you tell the sitter to keep your dog away from those petals!

I can’t say it enough. Consider getting a pet sitter for the big day. If you can not get a friend or a neighbor, (who is not a guest) to dog sit then consider hiring a pet wedding service. They attend to every canine need and amenity for your pet. The last thing you want to deal with on your wedding day is running after your dog and picking up poop!

I’m not going to lie. I am a sucker for dogs in clothes, especially dog wedding clothes, but only if the clothing fits well and is 100% comfortable. Stay away from anything too tight, hot or restrictive. Remember the rule. Less is more. Sometimes, a bow tie is all you need or a simple floral wreath around your dog’s neck.

Waste bags! You know your dog will have to do his business somewhere provide the waste bags so the sitter can keep the environment free and clear! You don’t want poo on any wedding shoe!

The important items should include a leash, a collar, waste bags, a favorite bone or chew toy, dog food, water bowl and plenty of treats!
