How To Make Family Formals Go Quickly

Brides, I love family formals! For me, weddings are just about the only time where all of my family is together in one place. This is the perfect occasion for a big family portrait! Family formals normally happen directly after the ceremony has ended. In order to make them go as smoothly and quickly as possible, I’ve put together some tips to help you plan for this part of your day!

Make groupings of your family combinations

Before your wedding day, think about all of the family members you’d like to include in family formals. Write a list of everyone, both on your side and your fiance’s side of the family. I also encourage my couples to think about family combinations that you’d like to have photographed. Not only does this ensure you will have every family combination, but it also allows us to call out the groupings so we know exactly which combinations are important to you. Your family will be happy that this part of the day is organized, planned, and they can get to cocktail hour faster!

Prepare your family

Once you have your family combinations, make sure you notify everyone on your list that they will be apart of family photos after the ceremony. This is important because sometimes family members escape (ex. to the bathroom, cocktail hour, running out to their car etc…). By having everyone aware that they will be needed for portraits, it saves the trouble of having to find Uncle Bob amongst all of the wedding guests!

Have family meet in one location after the wedding

Lastly, have a meeting location for all of your family. I normally recommend for the family to stay in the ceremony area before we move for family photos. Having a plan and location point makes family formals go so much more smoothly.

I hope these tips were helpful in thinking about your family portraits! I love working with each of my couples to create a custom timeline for your day! If you liked this post you may like Your Wedding Day Timeline.
