Comparison In Photography Land

Comparison In Photography Land

You Are Exactly Where You’re Meant To Be

Being in the creative field can be challenging at times. You are your own boss and set high expectations for yourself. Your success is solely based on how much time and effort you put into your business. For me, I had to learn how to deal with comparing myself to other creatives. Here are some tips to help you achieve your personal best while avoiding burnout.

The first thing I do when I’m caught up in photography land is I take a step back from technology. In photography land, a comparison is bound to happen. Our Instagram feeds are filled with other creatives, our friends are other photographers, and our business is very concentrated, to begin with. When comparing myself to other photographers, it never makes me feel good. Instead of being happy with how much I’ve achieved I’m obsessing on where I want to be. To help me get out of this funk, I remember the phrase, “community over competition.” Taking a step back from technology is helpful because I’m not surrounded by the amazing photography I see on every social media platform. It also is a good time to check yourself and realize how you have grown in this creative industry.

The second thing I do is pray and center myself knowing God has me exactly where I need to be and has the people in my life that I’m supposed to meet. By disconnecting technology, I am able to be still and be in God’s presence. Bringing God into my heart and mind during these times help lift the weight off my shoulders. After all, “all things are possible through Christ who strengthens me.”

The last thing that I do is reflect on where I’m at. I know right now, I am better than I was 6 months ago and I know that 6 months from now, I’ll be better than I am today. So that alone is good enough for me! When I think about that, it amazes me! I am learning, growing, and improving as both a person and a photographer. That is truly an accomplishment.

In the end, I know I’m am where I am meant to be, and no photographer is alike. We each are at different levels and we all have different knowledge. We touch different people’s lives and have different creative expression. That is the beauty of this industry and art. So I hope that whatever you are, keep pushing yourself and don’t give up! You’re amazing and you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
