10 Tips For Your Engagement Session

Congratulations on your engagement!! It’s such an exciting time and I am SO happy for you. Cherish every minute of being engaged because before you know it you’ll be walking down the aisle to say I do! I LOVE photographing my couples before their wedding day and the perfect time to do this is for your engagement sessions! Engagement sessions are so important as a time to get all of your camera jitters out of the way and feel comfortable in front of the camera! This will help make your wedding day run so much smoother and it’s FUN! Who doesn’t love photos, right?! Here are some helpful tips for your engagement session!

1. Engagement sessions help prepare for your wedding day

Congratulations! He popped the question and you said YES! Now it’s time to start planning your wedding and your engagement session. Whether you’re using the pictures for your save the dates or just to document a moment in time, I strongly encourage having an engagement session. This is the time where you and I can get to know each other before your big day. It’s also a time where you can get in front of the camera as a couple and get all those nervous “I’m being photographed” jitters out of the way. Some of the poses you’ll learn during your engagement session will help to make your wedding day pictures go much smoother!

2. The best time for an engagement session is sunrise or sunset

When to have your engagement session is the most common question I get asked. I recommend early morning (around sunrise) or late evening (sunset). These times change seasonally. The lighting during these two times is perfect for even light and makes for gorgeous photos.

3. Coordinate your outfits!

Ladies, dresses, and heels always look amazing. It elongates your lines and makes for romantic photos. When it comes to accessories, less is more, and make sure to remove hair ties from your wrist. Gentleman coordinate with your lady. You want to make sure the colors and patterns you are wearing compliment each other. My rule of thumb is no jeans or sneakers for the men. Business casual is the best and makes for romantic photos. Consider having two outfits, if you are a laid back couple bring along a casual outfit and a dressy outfit. This allows for different looks in your photos.

4. Locations can reflect you as a couple

Pick a location that means something to you or goes with your wedding theme. When you look back at your photos, you want to remember this moment. I’m more than happy to suggest locations for you as well!

5. Engagement sessions take time

Photo sessions usually last an hour to an hour and a half. Make sure you block out that time for your session. My engagement sessions are laid back and fun

6. Did somebody say Pinterest?

Yes, I LOVE Pinterest. Don’t be afraid to share your Pinterest boards or favorite engagement pictures! I love inspiration and want to capture you as a couple, how you’re comfortable.

7. Props are welcome!

If you have certain things that mean something to you, by all means, bring them along. Popular props include cute blankets, signs, balloons, food, drinks, picnic baskets, and even the family dog! If you do bring your fur-members along, make sure to have a designated dog watcher for your session. That way you don’t have to wrangle the pups and be concerned with getting photographed! If you are looking for a style or themed engagement session, I’m more than happy to help you plan this. I also make floral bouquets for engagement sessions if you are interested!

8. Be prepared to be affectionate and close!

Some couples are uncomfortable with PDA, especially when sometimes you have to hold poses for a long time. The thing is, on the camera you look further away than how you feel. To make those cuddly, intimate photographs, I’ll position you close to one another to get the look you’re going for!

9. Trust your photographer

I know that sounds silly, but my job is to make you look your very best and to capture your love story. Sometimes I’ll put you in a strange spot because the lighting is gorgeous or ask you to step out of your comfort zone to capture a picture. I promise the end result will be worth it.

10. Have FUN!

This is not the big day, it’s a time to be goofy, silly, laid back, and practice for your wedding day photography. After all, this is your love story, your moment in time, enjoy every minute of it!
